I'm skimming five chapters at a time because I desperately need to sleep or go triage my work so I don't get blindsided by yet another disaster in three weeks, but -
I started laughing by the end of the free chapters, bought the e-ARC on the spot, and have been grinning the rest of the way through. Alys "I own the building". Simon. Simon and his love affair with the Escobar Investigarif Federale building. Drunk Simon and his secret vices. Simon being amazing (and being able to see that amazing for once, not just read about his legendary reputation)... Ivan Ivan Ivan. Ivan in the books has never left a lasting impression on me, but it's impossible not to love him here (especially since he makes for such a wonderful break from all the larger-than-life characters around him). The entire thing reads like fanfic on crack (right down to using terms I could have sworn up and down were fanon, and little snippets and randomness that I would have bet good money that you would only ever find in fanon) and is the best thing ever. I don't even mind theOFCs new female characters.

Date: 2012-06-27 04:45 pm (UTC)From:Oh Ivan indeed, but with all fondness -- I think Ivan's very much not an idiot here; I actually really like him (and think that he did a great job in the circumstances, for the man in the spot). (I think it was in The Vor Game that Aral said to Miles that maybe he could have come up with a better plan in hindsight, but he did the best he could given what he had - why doesn't that apply to Ivan too? :( He didn't even get anyone killed. /gripegripe)
Anyway, I have Great Love for Ivan now, masked only by even greater and more amazing love for Bored!Simon :D.
