So I adore David Tennant.
And I apparently adore the character type of the young brilliantblond morally-ambiguous heir-to-the-throne with daddy issues and just a bit of psycho on the side. (Hello Rufus). Through in a side of absolute devotion whatever cause they've put their lot behind and put them through hell and I'm instantly hooked.
So of course I would end up with a fixation on Barty Crouch Jr. Hello HP fandom. After I avoided you for close to a decade. By the time I got to the incarceration-without-due-process part of his history, I was writing fic in my head.
Also, along the same vein of how I end up in fandoms years too late and miss all the boats, my life might have been very different if I had just read one more HP book instead of stopping at book 3 and giving up on the series.
I'm too embarrassed to even have a HP tag on this thing.
Also, delving more in-depth into the HP verse, it strikes me that the Wizarding World is really not a nice place to be, and I'm talking about the institutions here, and morals, of which no one seems to have any. Oh, it's not too bad within the schools, but outside of them - due process and access to justice seem to be non-existent, punishments are disproportionately draconian (Azkaban, seriously?) and their treatment of non-human sentient species is - let's just say that 'non-human being rights' is a concept they haven't heard of yet. But then again, there's rampant child abuse, so why are we even talking about other species?). (This isn't even touching on the issues that are acknowledged as issues in the book, like house elf slavery and bullying and elitism.)
And while it's not acceptable to use a curse to torture someone, it's perfectly acceptable to throw a fragile eighteen/nineteen year old into solitary confinement surrounded by Dementors until his mind gives way.
Dumbledore is way up there in my bad books thanks to the way he reacted to BCJ's death ("destruction of an important piece of evidence" - someone just died, show some respect. In fact, one of your former students just died. Quite possibly the best and the brightest student to ever pass through your halls. It shouldn't matter whether he's the bleeding enemy.)
It doesn't help that a couple of things I read last night were very long fics exploring all the ways in which the staff of Hogwarts & Co were Not Very Nice People at all.
But anyway, long story short - not a very nice place at all. Half the time I just want to burn all the supposed institutions down. This is quite possibly a problem. And I feel like I'm just barely scraping the surface here.)
