One thing I've noticed about my writing - I never quite lose the habit of absolute precision, even when writing fiction. I wonder if that's what detracts from the prettiness that I keep aspiring to, and never quite succeed in, achieving. (Now this sentence, or, more correctly, the preceding sentence, is just grammatically wrong, but I'm too tired to change it.) Too many commas also - that's always a problem.
I used a contraction (either "that's" or "it's", I can't remember which) in a work email today, to bring the formality down a notch (funny, how one tiny little mark can change the entire tone of a message), and I'm still wondering if I went overboard.
ETA: The outline for a new fic just galloped into 2144 words, and my first instinct was "Why is this so short?" *amused*
