[Vorkosigan] Ground Zero
Ahaha. So I needed a break from all the tragedy and angst and serious business that was the last fic. I seriously contemplated writing a Discworld/Vorkosigan crossover (Simon and Vimes bitching about their bosses, Miles getting under Vetinari's skin, Ivan making friends with the Librarian, Ivan hitting on Angua, Gregor and Vetinari discussing their cities/planets, Sybil and Alys, oh the possibilities), but ... too much work. That's something that would definitely need a lot more careful planning if I ever did it. (Also, I'd have to write Miles. Scary business).
So I was scrolling through the CVA category of the Ficathon and thinking that it looked a little lonely, and another of those prompts just hit me.
And so we have a fic. Beware spoilers.
Oh, this fic was nothing but fun. (Also, 3,350 words? I thought it would round out at 1k, tops. Inability to write short fills, what?) Poking fun at late nights in the office and my own industry's bad habits and experiences was irresistible (the thing about thinking the building was swaying = working too hard? Yes. Real story. Not leaving desks in an earthquake? Also real story.)
The only thing that gave me pause was deciding who the hapless ImpSec officer narrating the story would be - I hate using OCs, would almost certainly not write a story if I was forced to use an OC as the lead character, and all the regular ImpSec guys that we know and love are outside the building when it happens (Duv, Guy, etcetc). And so - Vorberg to the rescue! I do love him a lot, and it feels awkward giving him a first name, but I can't quite have him call himself 'Vorberg' when he's the narrator.
Have I mentioned that I love ficathons? And that this year's ficathon is nothing short of amazing?
